Calf strain and shin splints are common injuries, which can be treated with kinesiology tape. When a person experiences pain in the lower leg, this can lead to other complaints because of a wrong posture or a wrong way of walking. The wrong posture or wrong way of walking often occurs unconsciously to reduce pain or irritation and can result in, for example, knee or back problems.

There are several options to make a calf or Achilles tendon tape last longer.

  • Immediately after taping, rub the tape well and it will adhere better to the skin.
  • After taping, rub the tape with talcum powder, especially on the edges. The talcum powder adheres to the edges of the tape, making the tape less likely to curl when you are getting dressed.
  • Sleeping with a stocking or a net bandage around the foot to protect the tape.
  • Do not start the Achilles tendon tape under the foot, but start on the back of the heel.
  • Reinforce the anchor at the back of the heel with a transverse strip of tape – this strip has no further function, it is only for protection, so it must be applied without stretch on the tape. This method of reinforcement can also be used if the tape preferably starts on the sole of the foot, the extra reinforcement then comes as a kind of stirrup around the foot and ends at the top of the foot or on the lower leg. This reinforcement must also be installed absolutely without stretch.

In addition, it is also possible to choose CureTape® Sports for tape constructions around the foot. The material of CureTape Sports is made of viscose with a 25% stronger acrylic adhesive layer. Excellent for athletes and tape over tape constructions commonly used on the foot.

A shin splint irritation is a very unpleasant and difficult injury to treat. The symptoms consist of various complaints on the inside of the lower leg.

There are various forms known as shin splints from which the Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is the best known. The problems are caused by overload. There is insufficient blood flow, this causes waste products to collect in the tissue. It starts with tenderness after palpation and at a later stage even just walking can cause pain. The applied tape is described in the MTC® kinesiology taping method book.

Based on the individual situation and the differences in anatomy, it is determined whether the posterior tibial muscle or the soleus muscle at the tibial margin should be influenced. With the fascia tape, the split of the two strips of tape should be exactly on the pain point.
